Why should it be a phone? Because it does everything else the iPhone does (except camera and phone.) When people are carrying or using this, why should they want to also carry a phone as well? Sure, the iPhone is a better form factor for a phone, but carrying both is not a better form factor than carrying one.

However, to do this, the carriers have to offers something they don't, but should -- let me have 2 phones on the same number, and let me use one at a time. In that case one would carry the right device for the time, and it would be the phone for that time. With bluetooth in the case of something too big to hold to your ear, or speakerphone, when on the ipad or laptop.

And yes, my camera should also be a phone, put a bluetooth headset on it. There are many other uses for that as well.
