Hi Aswath,

The path from Skype to Calliflower when using the PSTN is as follows:

Skype client to Skype Media Gateway to PSTN to Calliflower Media Gateway to Calliflower.

When direct it is:

Skype client to Skype SBC to Calliflower.

Skype client packetizes and encodes using SILK which then must be transcoded to G.711. I'm not sure how many transcodings happen in total. The PSTN, for example, may use an intermediate protocol like G.729 for efficient transport. What is clear is that when the voice path transits the PSTN there are at least two extra packetizations that occur, and maybe more.

Thanks, Alec.

I don't quiet follow the double transcoding on a SkypeOut access, in particular "PSTN to G.711". Isn't PSTN G.711, if the connection is a digital facility? So won't SkypeOut call be encoded in G.711?

But what is happening is the voice being packetized two times, once at the Skype client and another time at the PSTN Gateway connected to Calliflower. But in the direct connect case, it is happening only once - at the Skype client. The extra packetization will introduce delay (of the order of 20 msec) and associated degradation in quality.
