This was just a quick test; the major accomplishment was just to receive HD video as identified by the aspect ratio and Call Information data. I'll wait until there are more webcams around to do further testing.

Right, though since you can receive, you can certainly set the video to "Actual size" (it's in the right click menu) and then do a screen capture/print screen to put the actual size image in the clipboard for people to examine. You can't send the HQ video (not without something like an Intel I7, I'm led to expect) until you get the camera with the h264 hardware, but you can certainly judge and screen-cap the quality of received video. Indeed, having the camera yourself doesn't help you see the quality of the video it sends that much.

Yep, having Skype for Mac support would certainly increase the webcams' potential market size by 20%-25%.

Two factors indicated that I had a HD: the 1.77 ratio of screen dimensions and the "technical call info". Since I don't have the webcam (I was called in both instance) I have little control over what I capture. What I did do was to expand the picture to full screen and it was quite impressive even though full screen was 1680 x 1050 (beyond 1280 x 720). Also, as mentioned in a post update, I did not want to embarrass one caller since I would have to show every facial hair.

Re bandwidth: As stated in my previous post, HD Video calls are supposed to require a minimum 800Kbps bandwidth. For that reason I have not upgraded my own Internet service beyond 1Mbps upload so that I can test that this minimum is met in an actual call. Two factors contributing to this: (1) the H.264 compression is done on the webcam itself and (2) Skype has worked on its client to minimize the upload bandwidth requirement. Going beyond 1 Mbps for a minimum would certainly reduce the market size for these webcams.

It will degrade to VGA (640 x 480) or even lower if conditions do not permit HD transmission.

Hey, how about an actual screen cap of the HD call, so we can see the quality. Ie. a cap where the image is 720 pixels wide!

I notice it saying 2 megabits of bandwidth. That's going to be the real killer, there just aren't that many people who can sustain that on upstream. Nobody on DSL, some people on cable modems (though not many in the same area) and while many corporations have networks in those ranges, I don't know how many of their employees can be sending or receiving 2 megabit streams reliably.

Will be interesting to learn. I had heard 1 megabit would work though, which helps a lot. I presume your sample was on a LAN and it was using all it can use.

They initially said March for the cameras -- I am eager to try and review one -- and now "Spring" which probably means June, alas.

Some questions that will be interesting -- how well does it degrade if you don't have the bandwidth? Does it just drop to 640x480 or to 854x480, or does it do anything in between?
